Antonius 'Tony' Zwetsloot

Antonius Johannes 'Tony' Zwetsloot passed away on March 8, 2000 in Napa, California at the age of 55.

After graduating from Napa High, Tony served in the U.S. Army.  In 1967, he went to work for Pacific Gas & Electric Company, where he worked for several years.  Tony was an avid bowler.

Tony is survived by his wife Mary (Howard) Zwetsloot (Napa High Class of 1967), his sons David, Andy, and Nick, his parents, four brothers (including Hans -- Napa High Class of 1962), and one sister.

Tony passed away at Queen of the Valley Hospital.  Funeral services were held on March 15, 2000 at Napa Valley Memorial Park.  A Memorial Service was held that same day at First Christian Church in Napa.

Tony's grave marker at Napa Valley Memorial Gardens:

Napa Valley Register, Monday, December 10, 1962:

Avery Phillips, 17, was treated by the family doctor after the car in which she was riding struck another car from the rear on Soscol Avenue opposite Craigie Motors.  She was a passenger in a car driven by Douglas Guinn, 18, who was cited for driving too closely after he ran into the back of a car driven by Antonius Zwetsloot, 17.  Zwetsloot was stopped in traffic to make a left turn into Napa Bowl when the accident occurred.  Guinn [later CHP Officer Guinn] said he did not see Zwetsloot's car in the heavy fog in time to avoid the mishap.

Tony was a great and very nice person who I met in sixth grade when he came to Shearer Elementary School when he came over to this country from Holland in the Netherlands.  I didn't know any Dutch at the time, but I could swear for him and say G-- Damnit.  Sweet, huh?

Hans, I have fond memories of when you and your brother Tony joined us at Napa High -- I think it was 1957, and as I recall your family had just emigrated from the Netherlands.  I remember Tony as average height and build; but you as tall and thin.  I was surprised to read you were in the Submarine Service on account of being tall!  I haven't seen you since graduation, but Tony was a frequent visitor to my auto parts store.  He was such a nice guy.  I was sad to learn of his passing.
